super healthy green colada - The First Messpin it!
I thought I’d ease back into the blogging groove with a little happy hour post. Hawaii was great! Aside from the slight suspicion that I may have developed an avocado allergy, it was the most relaxing 10 days I’ve had in a while. I posted some photos on Instagram if you want to check them out. I’m going to try just a small bit of avocado soon to see if it was just some weird, away-from-home reaction.

The week leading up to our trip was pretty busy, as those weeks tend to be for pretty much anyone. In the midst of the chaos, I was explaining to Mark that I had to make a bunch of posts to go up while we were away and he was like “Why don’t you just take a real break?” So that’s what I did. It felt so good to just pack my stuff and GO, ya know? I didn’t come back with too many souvenirs (a groovy chakra mist, a locally made mala, tote bag, macadamia nuts obviously), but I did get some Hawaiian spirulina to take home. Spirulina is something I try to take somewhat regularly because of the iron, Vitamin A, chlorophyll, and highly digestible protein. Plus it makes smoothies a pretty blue-green, like this coconut pineapple one. Onto the links, happy weekend etc :)

Coffee cups are an environmental problem child. Imagine if Starbucks made a switch to something like this. Massive impact.

Our dog can be incredibly shy sometimes. Lots of great tips here for helping the more skittish pups gain some confidence.

I love John Hodgman, and I can’t believe that I’ve happened upon this series only recently.

In memory of a very sweet, cemetery-dwelling cat. I feel like I know this in my heart of hearts, but it still amazes me how emotionally tapped-in animals are.

Surprise! Complaining is detrimental to your health.

I love the new digest about small (but secretly big) changes from Vega called ZEST. This little read about finding optimal health, wherever you’re at, is great.

This long distance friendship between a man and a penguin is so sweet.

David Chang changed the photo policy at Ko: “It didn’t matter if someone was taking a photo of a dish that had been photographed 10,000 times prior—this was their experience.”

Soothing broths are one of my favourite comforts, right up until those first warm days hit, and this one sounds incredible (whether you do it up as vegetarian pho or not).

I still love The Golden Girls for this reason: “The premise of the show was that people who were 60 or 70 weren’t drastically different from people who were 20 or 30; everyone wants to be happy.” Obviously ageism is lame, and watching those reruns in my 20s was one of the more valuable ways I found to squander time.

On healing thoughts and mind-body medicine.

Highly sensitive people out there? Next-level empathy, overstimulation, and lacking a “natural shield.” I was nodding along the whole time I read this.

It’s brave to work towards the de-stigmatization of mental illness, but this seems especially so in the hospitality industry. It’s an environment that generally addresses all struggles/incidents with a “get on with it” mentality, if anything. I always loved watching Chris Cosentino on Top Chef Masters, and this just brings my adoration up even more.

Animal reunions always make me smile/tear up, but this one with a mama and her pups really made my day.

Serves: 1
Notes: You could use chlorophyll, powdered wheatgrass, or any greens powder blend that you like in place of the spirulina. I’ve made this with light coconut milk, but you could also substitute a half and half mixture of full fat coconut milk and filtered water for the same texture/flavour.

1 cup light coconut milk (from a can)
1/2 ripe banana
1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
1/2 teaspoon spirulina powder
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Combine all of the ingredients in an upright blender and blend on high until smooth. Enjoy immediately.

    I can sympathize with the avocado allergy, I developed one a few years ago and I’m also allergic to bananas, apparently they share a protein that some people can’t digest. Keep an eye out for symptoms when you eat bananas, too!ReplyCancel
